Corfu Panagia Mirtiotissa MonasteryRemote, secluded and tucked into the picturesque bay of Mirtiotissa is the Panagia Mirtiotissa monastery. So far it has been something of an insider tip for those longing to become acquainted with a Corfu that lies beyond the realms of usual tourism. The monastery was built in the 14th C and ,like many of the island's buildings, was heavily damaged in the WW2 air raids. Today it is Father Sofronios who oversees the conservation and restoration of the monastery with inimitable tender loving care. This clergyman, known for taking in stray dogs and cats, receives visitors with a warm welcome and he gladly chats about all the hard work he's invested in his monastery. He devotes special attention to the flourishing gardens in which many magnificent plants grow. |
