The lush vegetation on the island owes its optimal conditions to the unique microclimate on Corfu. It is no coincidence that Corfu is often paraphrased as the Green Island.

The rich insular flora includes oak, elm and cypress trees, not to mention the panoply of 36 different species of orchids, which along with many other types of flowers furnish the countryside with its colourful charm.

The uncontested sovereign of Corfiot plant life however consists in the sheer innumerable population of wild olive trees, estimated by some to exceed 2,5 million.

Since they are hardly ever trimmed, they tend to belittle their cousins on the Greek mainland both in terms of height and volume.
