There is also a number of mammals to be encountered on Corfu: shy foxes, Least weasels, Eurasian otters and porcupines, the latter only to be approached with great caution.

Naturally, the rich vegetation also provides an excellent habitat for numerous types of reptiles and amphibia. Thus the island's ponds and rivers are teeming with animal life, whether it's the gigantic bullfrogs, tree frogs, aesculapian snakes, tortoises, turtles or colourful lizards.

But beware: The entire island is also home to the shy but venomous European horned viper.
