Modern History

From the 16th C onwards Corfu was embroiled in many wars against the expansive policies of the Ottoman Turks.

In 1797 the island became French property and a Russian protectorate. After a period of renewed French rule, Corfu was transformed into a protectorate of the British Empire and on May 21st of 1864 it was reunited with Greece.

Corfu City suffered severe air raids during the Second World War, initially perpetrated by Germany, then by the Allies.

It is thanks to revenues proceeding from the growing tourist industry of recent times that the damages caused are gradually being repaired.
