Corfu AchillionLocated in the proximity of Corfu City, not far from the little village of Gastouri, is one of Corfu's most renowned tourist attractions: the Achillion. The Achillion is a magnificent palace built around 1890 as a holiday residence for the famous Austrian Empress Sissi. She had instantly fallen for Corfu and thus became one of the first holiday-makers of modern times. The classicist palace is surrounded by vast and beautifully kept gardens and has a baroque chapel that no visitor should miss. Incidentally, the name Achillion is derived from the Greek hero Achilles, whom Sissi held in admiration for his strength and courageous deeds. To this day the garden boasts a large statue of Achilles. |
